A Software Engineer 4 is an expert in designing and building features for our virtual care platform.  They work closely with our Front-end Application, Architecture, and Product teams during various phases of the development cycle.  They also provide consulting services to the Site Reliability, Integrations, Support, Customer Success, and Professional Services teams to help them understand the details of application feature setup and operation. All our software development teams work using the Scrum process with a two-week sprint cycle. A Software Engineer 4 is expected to be a resource for the rest of the engineering team for our development process, coding standards, core frameworks, and emerging technologies.


The Software Engineer 4 job description is intended to point out major responsibilities within the role, but it is not limited to these items.


  • Design, develop, document, test, and debug new and existing features for multiple Rails applications.  Level 4 Software Engineers will often be the lead engineer on a feature project, working with the principal architect to guide development strategy. 
  • Participate in, and sometimes lead, software design meetings and partner with the Product Team to analyze user needs and inform technical requirements.
  • Create and maintain automated tests to ensure the platform is stable and to prevent issues from occurring.
  • Mentor other engineering colleagues in software engineering principles and techniques.  Perform code reviews of others’ code.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • BA/BS Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience required
  • 7-10 years of experience working on MVC-based web applications, demonstrating increasing skill in tackling technical challenges. A desire (and proven ability) to pick up new frameworks and concepts.
  • Experience solving complex technical problems.


  • Deep understanding of, and willingness to teach, software development practices and concepts such as Object-oriented programming, Web application technologies, Web application security, and testing best practices. 
  • Knowledge of Ruby, Rails, PostgresSQL, RSpec, and others.
  • Understanding of the analysis of programs such as space and time complexity.
  • Highly capable of communicating technical concepts and ideas to other engineers and to non-engineering members of the team. Able to discuss application features & use cases with end users and customer contacts.
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced startup environment and work on a wide variety of tasks and projects
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Professional – unquestionable integrity, credibility and character with high moral and ethical behavior
  • Background in software for healthcare, innovation projects, and/or hospital or health system environments or other high security environments preferred. 
  • Experience with any of the following not required but appreciated: Javascript, AngularJS, Web sockets, Web Security, mobile app development.


The majority of work responsibilities are performed in a remote or onsite office setting, carrying out detailed work sitting at a desk/table and working on the computer. Office facilities are available for those in Minneapolis, MN or Austin, TX areas. Travel may be required from time to time.
